How Segment-Level Seat Mapping Works

Its route sequence is: Yesvantpur → Tumakuru → Arsikere → Davangere → Haveri → SSS Hubballi → Dharwad → Belagavi → Miraj → Pune → Manmad → Bhusaval → Bhopal → Vidisha → V. Lakshmibai Jhansi → H. Nizamuddin.
Suppose you want to travel from Yesvantpur to Pune. Any vacant seat available from Yesvantpur all the way to H. Nizamuddin (or any intermediate station past Pune, such as Bhopal, Manmad, or Jhansi) can legally be booked for your journey from Yesvantpur to Pune. Indian Railways does not restrict seat search to your exact station pair; any overlapping slot counts.
On the same train, suppose you want to travel from Haveri to Pune. The primary charting station for Haveri is Yesvantpur. Therefore, a ticket is available for booking from Haveri to Pune if there is a vacant berth from Yesvantpur (or any station prior to Haveri) all the way through to Pune (or any station past Pune).

The vacant berth matches your requested origin and destination stations exactly (Your From → Your To). You board at your chosen station and alight at your destination with zero extra fare or intermediate adjustments.
The vacant berth starts right at your boarding station but terminates at a downstream station past your destination (Your From → Past Your To). You can legally book this ticket, board comfortably at your origin, and simply de-board when your destination arrives.
The vacant berth originates at an upstream station before your boarding stop and terminates exactly at your destination (Before Your From → Your To). You can book this ticket online (or set your boarding point to your actual station during IRCTC booking) to ride directly to your destination.
The vacant berth covers a wider journey that starts before your station and continues past your destination (Before Your From → Past Your To). Because the physical seat remains empty throughout your journey leg, you can book the containing segment to secure confirmed travel.

What is the difference between Chart 1 and Chart 2 preparation times?
The First Reservation Chart (Chart 1) is prepared 10 hours before the scheduled departure of the train from its origin station (or on the previous evening if the train starts early in the morning). Once Chart 1 is prepared, the remaining vacant berths are opened for "Current Booking" at a discounted rate. The Second Reservation Chart (Chart 2) is prepared 30-15 minutes before the train's scheduled departure from its origin or boarding station, incorporating any final cancellations made after Chart 1 was finalized.
How does the quota system affect vacant berths?
Indian Railways divides seats into various quotas such as General (GN), Ladies (LD), Senior Citizens, and Tatkal (CK). If seats assigned to specific quotas remain unutilized at the time of chart preparation, they are released to the general public pool. This release process frequently creates sudden spikes in available vacant berths during Current Booking hours.
